Richard Everingham Scammon was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 9, 1883. He earned his B.A. in 1904 from the University of Kansas, his M.A. in 1906 and Ph.D. in 1909 from Harvard University. Before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Scammon was an instructor in zoology and anatomy at the University of Kansas (1906-1907, 1910-1913) and Harvard University (1907-1910).
